Regular readers of this and other newspapers are by now familiar with
pictures of the MV Princess of the Stars, lying capsized in the
Sibuyan Sea less than a kilometer from the shore of the municipality
of San Fernando, Romblon. Some of the pictures feature in the
background a lush, saw-tooth-shaped mountain called Guiting-Guiting,
one of the natural wonders of the Philippines.

The tragedy that befell the inter-island ferry owned by Sulpicio
Lines graphically illustrated the perils of corporate avarice.
However, the mountain that provides a magnificent backdrop to the ill-
fated ship is itself in danger of falling victim—also to business
greed.

Guiting-Guiting was declared a "natural park" in 1996 on the strength
of Proclamation No. 746 promulgated by then-President Fidel V. Ramos.
It is one of the few remaining sites of rich biodiversity in our
archipelago, and hosts numerous flora and fauna that are endemic only
to the protected area. But that has not stopped certain commercial
interests from trying to spoil, nay, ravage the unique ecology of
Sibuyan and, in particular, Mount Guiting-Guiting, which is the
island's natural centerpiece.

Mount Guiting-Guiting has long been known to contain reserves of iron
and nickel as well as precious metals, notably gold. In fact, some
islanders make a living out of gold panning. Its mineral reserves,
however, have caused some quarters to cast covetous eyes on Sibuyan
and even the protected area around and including its fabled mountain.

Last year a company tried to pass itself off as a "small-scale mining
operation" and began bringing earth-moving and other equipment to the
island. It immediately met stiff resistance from the islanders.

Matters came to a head on October 3, when a security guard hired by
the mining company opened fire on a group of locals protesting the
mining operations, mortally wounding one of the protesters. The
killing took place at Sitio Olango in Barangay España in the
municipality of San Fernando. The fatality was 42-year-old Armin
Marin, described as a former member of the environment group WWF-
Philippines and a municipal councilor of San Fernando.

The incident managed to grab headlines in Manila and caught the
attention of then newly appointed Secretary Lito Atienza of the
Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), among others.

Actually, the DENR had no hand in the permit granted to the mining
company. All that the company needed to do—since it described its
operations as merely "small-scale"—was to secure the approval of
local government authorities, which it did.

Atienza, however, decided to step in when it was revealed that the
mining company was using heavy equipment, belying its claim of small-
scale operations. "Small-scale mining means you only use picks and
shovels to dig out mineral ore from the ground," the DENR chief
pointed out at a press forum, which was also attended by a large
delegation of Sibuyan islanders.

Then and there Atienza vowed that if any mining company were to apply
for a permit from DENR to operate on Sibuyan he would reject it
outright. The Sibuyanons were relieved and elated.

The uproar over the killing of Armin Marin by a watchman employed by
Sibuyan Nickel Properties Development Corp. last year eventually
compelled the provincial authorities in Romblon to withdraw the
permit issued to the company. Over a dozen other anti-mining
advocates have reportedly died in the struggle to keep Sibuyan's
protected area pristine, but few details are available to confirm
this claim.

Some months back, Sibuyan Nickel began dismantling its equipment,
indicating its abandonment of its "small-scale mining" (wink, wink)
operations on the island. However, while this was going on the
islanders received reports that no less than 27 applications to
commence mining in several areas in Sibuyan are pending with either
DENR or local authorities or both.

According to documents accessed by concerned Sibuyanons from the
Mines and Geosciences Bureau, a sub-agency of DENR, the mining
applications cover the villages of Canjalon, Otod, Azagra, Campalingo
and Panangcalan, all in San Fernando municipality. Other villages on
the island, including portions of the protected area around Mount
Guiting-Guiting are reportedly targeted also.

Guesting at the Kapihan sa Sulo media forum last weekend, former San
Fernando mayor Dindo Rios expressed alarm over the 27 pending mining
applications.

"Do they intend to level Mount Guiting-Guiting?" Rios asked. "If the
pending applications are approved, those mining operations will
completely destroy the island."

A reiteration of the DENR chief's determination to block any mining
in Sibuyan should reassure the worried islanders—and affirm Mount
Guiting-Guiting as a state-protected natural park.

IDOL KITA MIGUEL HAHAHA

hi everyone esp to the "g2 & me" team and my sisses and brods..

last march 19-20, my friends and i embarked on a trip to sibuyan to climb the majestic mt guiting-guiting, one of the hardest climbs in the country alongside mt halcon. not only did the whole place melted our hearts but also the very hospitaable sibuyanons who assisted us from the very moment we landed at san agustin and back to where we came from.

a few days ago, tropical cyclone "frank" left the country and stashed away lives and homes in some parts of our country and one of the gravest casualties of this event was the sinking of the mv princess of the stars. but then, the said ship has overshadowed the needs of the sibuyanons for relief goods.

if you have extra stuff at home you can donate any of these items:

2. medicines
3. clothes
4. blankets

... and coordinate with the social action center of the vicariate of sibuyan (0921 371-43-48). there will be nuns and priests who will be assisting you in your deliverables to sibuyan.

reflections: hindi ko minamasama ang mga taong suma, magna o kung ano pa man yang award na yan. sa totoo lang, respetado ko sila sa pagiging masipag nila at respetado ko din ang kung sinumang naging inspirasyon nila para makapagtapos ng pag-aaral ng may matataas na marka. maswerte pa pag sa prestihiyosong paaralan. respetado ko ang mga mag-aaral na nakahakot ng medalya dahil isa sa mga taong ito ay ang ermats kong iskolar ng bayan at ang bespren ko na nasa tokyo university ngayon (plug-in: hi bes!).

ano pa bang mga klaseng mga tao ang nirerespeto ko? ang nirerespeto ko e yung mga taong grasa sa tabi-tabi na pag kinausap mo e may laman. ang ibig ko sabihin ng laman ay "wisdom" at hindi yung ilang milyong letra at numerong kinabisa para pumasa sa isang subject - ang katalinuhang mula sa loob na kahit sinong nilalang ay di kayang burahin o baguhin. ang mga taong isinantabi ang kanilang pride para makipagsapalaran bilang d.h. sa hongkong para maitawid ng gutom ang mga anak niya dahil wala na siyang makitang ibang oportunidad dito sa bansa. mga taong hindi nakagraduate ng kolehiyo na nagpakaputa sa ermita, nakapag-asawa ng puti, nagmigrate at nang yumaman, bumalik sa pinas, nagtayo ng scholarship foundation para sa mga batang di makapag aral kasi inspirasyon niya ang labing dalawang kapatid niyang napagtapos niya ng kolehiyo...

wika nga ng isa kong prof, "philosophy is the love of wisdom and wisdom does not necessarily mean intelligence... many intelligent people are fools". kung lahat ng mga taong nakaupo sa gobyerno ngayon ay wais, hindi dapat nagkakagulo ang bansa kasi kung may malasakit ka sa tao gagamitin mo lahat nang napag-aralan mo para mahalin ang kapwa mo. anong saysay ng talino kung gagamitin mo lang para makaisa sa kapwa at para laitin sila kasi hindi mo sila kapantay? kung sa tingin mong ikaw itong "bitter" at mapanirang achiever, di pa huli ang lahat para sa iyo. pwede mo pa namang gamitin yung sipag at tiyaga mo sa pag kolekta ng parangal sa pagbabago sa sarili at pagmamahal sa kapamilya, sa kaibigan at sa ibang tao. ***pero ok din naman ang may kontrabida para pambalanse hehehe***

Ngayong araw na ito, sa ating pagtatapos, mayroon akong dalang Transcript of Record. Ang estudyanteng may-ari ng transcript na ito ay nag-aral sa De La Salle University. Sa unibersidad na ito, kapag ikaw ay isang undergraduate, may ID number na nagsisimula sa 94 at pataas, kung lumipas ang isang buong schoolyear at umabot ka sa 15 units na bagsak,masisipa ka sa paaralan.

Ang transcript na hawak ko ay mayroong 27 units ng bagsak. 12 sa mga ito ay tinamo ng estudyante sa iisang schoolyear lang. Ang isang subject ay kadalasang may bigat na 3 units. Kung iisiping mabuti, isang subject na bagsak na lang ay pwede na masipa ang estudyanteng may-ari ng transcript na ito.

Ang speech na ito ay hindi ko ginawa para i-acknowledge ang paghihirap ng ating magulang sa pagpapaaral natin. Hindi ko din ito ginawa para maghayag ng political statement, o kumbinsihin kayo na huwag umalis sa bansa at tulungan itong maka-ahon. Ang speech na ito ay para sa mga normal na estudyante na kagaya ng may may-ari ngtranscript na hawak ko, dahil madalas, wala talagang paki-alam ang unibersidad sa mga achievements nila. May mga awards na gaya ng Summa Cum Laude, Best Thesis Award at Leadership Award. Pero ni minsan, hindi pa ako nakakakita ng unibersidad na nagbigay ng "Hung-on-and-managed-to-graduate-despite-nearly-getting-kicked-out-during-his-academic-stay" award.

Maaaring isang malaking kagaguhan ang konseptong ito para sa karamihan. Bakit mo pararangalan ang isang estudyanteng bulakbol, bobo, tamad o iresponsable? Hindi ba dapat isuka ito ng unibersidad? Ito yung mga tipo ng estudyanteng walang ia-asenso sa buhay, hindi ba?

Ayun. Natumbok niyo.Iyun na nga ang dahilan. 

Madalas, pag ang isang estudyante ay may pangit na marka sa paaralan, lalong-lalo na sa kolehiyo, nakakapanghina ito ng loob. Nandiyan yung tatamarin ka mag-aral, nandyan yung iisipin mo, "Ano pa kayang trabaho ang makukuha ko?", "Call center na naman o clerical?", "Bat kasi ang bobo ko?". Kung matalino lang ako, sana, sa Proctor and Gamble ako, o kung saang sikat na kumpanya.

Mas mahirap ang dinadaanan ng mga estudyanteng bumabagsak. Kahit na sabihin mong kasalanan nilang bumabagsak sila, hindi ninyo alam kung ano ang pakiramdam ng ganun. Madaling sabihin na "kaya mo yan", "mag-aral ka lang", pero alam ba natin talaga angsinasabi natin?

Kapag ang isang estudyante ay bumabagsak sa unibersidad, nandiyan yung tatawanan niya lang yan. O di kaya naman, ipagmamalaki niya pang "TAKE 5 NA KO!", "o pare, magpi-PhD na ako sa Anmath3/Calculus/etc". Pero hindi alam ng mga isang Summa Cum Laude kung ano ang nasa isip ng isang normal na estudyante sa tuwing matutulog ito at alam niyang pag-gising niya, kailangan niya na naming ulitin ang isang subject na nakuha niya na sasusunod na term. Kahit kailan, hindi naging problema sa Star Student na sabihing "Nay, bagsak ako". At hindi kailanman sumagi sa isip nila na "Paano kaya kung sa walang-pangalang kumpanya lang ako makapagtrabaho?". Dahil sigurado sila sa kinabukasan nila.

Huwag na tayong maglokohan. Grades are everything. Kahit bali-baligtarin mo iyan, hindi magiging patas ang mga kumpanyang kumukuha ng fresh graduates para magtrabaho sa kanila. Minsan din naman, nadadaan sa palakasan, pero ganun pa din. Kung hindi ka academically good, wala kang patutunguhan. Kung hindi man yun, mas mahirap yung dadaanan mo para lang makaa-abot sa prestihiyosong posisyon.

Kaya ngayong graduation, ang speech na ito ay inaaalay ko para sa mga estudyanteng lumpagpak, muntik-muntikanan nang masipa o yung lahat ng paraang pwede, ginawa na para lang makatapos. Gagawin kong patas ang mundo para sa inyo kahit isang araw lang. Kahit ano pa ang sabihin ng ibang tao, kesyo kasalanan mo man na pangit ang marka mo o muntik ka nang makick-out, saludo ako sa hindi mo pagtigil sa pag-aaral. Saludo ako na may lakas ka ng loob na harapin pa rin ang mundo kahit alam mong hindi ito magiging patas sa iyo. Saludo ako na kahit pangit ang transcript mo, taas-noo ka pa rin ngayong graduation at proud na proud sa sarili mo.

Ano ngayon ang mangyayari sa mga graduates pagkatapos nitong graduation? Ayoko nang puntahan yung pwedeng mangyayari sa mga Cum Laude. Baduy. Alam mo namang may patutunguhan ang buhay nila e. Pero dun sa mga lumagpak, ano ang meron? 

Maaring makakuha kayo ng mediocre na trabaho lang. Pwede ka rin swertehin, baka makapagtrabaho ka sa magandang kumpanya. Madami pang pwedeng mangyari. Huwag kayong mawalan ng pag-asa. Kung nung college, nagtiyaga kayo, eh bakit titigilan niyo yung pagti-tiyaga ngayon?

Pwede ring ganito: Mag-aral ka ulit. Ipakita mo sa kanila na kung sipagin ka lang, malayo ang mararating mo. Subukan mong patunayan sa kanila na kapag pinilit mo, kaya mo ring abutin yung naabot nila. Na hindi ka bobo, kundi tinamad ka lang.

Baka sabihin ninyo, drawing lang ako.

I've been on both sides. Naranasan ko na ring lumagpak, at muntikan na din akong masipa. Naranasan ko na umulit ng 4 na beses sa iisang subject. Naranasan ko na na masumbatan ng magulang, kapatid at kung sino-sino pang propesor na walang pakialam sa pakiramdam ng estuyante. Naranasan ko nang hindi makatulog ng maraming gabi sa pagiisip kung paano ko na naman sasabihin sa magulang ko na may bagsak na naman ako. Kaya alam ko ang pakiramdam ninyo. Akin ang transcript na ito.

Pagkagraduate ko ng college, ano ang ginawa ko? Eto. Nagtrabaho muna ng konti, tapos aral ulit. Kuha ng Masteral sa kurso ko. Hindi para sa trabaho o kung ano man. Kundi parapatunayan sa sarili ko na noong mga panahong bumabagsak ako, tinatamad lang ako.

This is a rebellion. I raise my middle finger to every professor, over-achiever, naysayer, and detractor that told me that I can't make it. I raise my middle finger to every valedictory or graduation speech that only gratifies the university, those who were achievers in school or those who gratify the country when it's supposed to be the graduate's moment of glory. You are supposed to acknowledge EVERYONE. Even those who failed many times.

Kaya sa inyong mga graduates na medyo hindi maganda ang marka, para sa inyo ito. Kung kinaya ko ito, kaya niyo rin to. Imposibleng hindi.

thank god for enlightenment, she posted a public apology :) so now i will be sleeping in peace. i'm one of the people who flamed her multiply and perhaps a lot of the viewers there have witnessed wixxie, i and others' exchanges of bible verses with some solipsistic christians with messianic complex. kidding aside, at least she realized that it is the act of committing a sin that makes people "evil" (quote and quote) not homosexuality per se as what most christians believe.

i guess this is a lesson learned big time for rachel, to the lgbt comunity and their friends - respect

i just dropped by my friend wixxie's bloggie and found rachelragaza's multiply page...i admire her for her knowledge of the bible as she bombarded her blog entry with multiple citations of verses but then her holier-than-thou attitude added the skewed logic to make it worse.
